The sea trial is the moment the boat stops being a series of photographs and a list of equipment and becomes a physical object that moves through water. It is also the last major check before an offer becomes binding, and it reveals things no dock inspection can: how the engine performs under load, whether the helm is balanced, whether the rig moves in ways that shouldn't be happening, and whether the boat makes alarming sounds that become routine enough to ignore only after you own it.

Most first-time buyers do the sea trial wrong. They bring along friends who generate excitement. They focus on how the boat feels rather than what it tells them. They're so relieved that nothing broke that they overlook what was marginal. This guide is about how to do it right.

Who Should Be on the Sea Trial

You and your surveyor. That's the core crew. A significant other who will co-own the boat is reasonable. One friend with relevant sailing experience is acceptable if they'll be helpful rather than social. Beyond that, the sea trial becomes a party, not an evaluation.

The seller or their representative will typically be aboard. That's standard — it's their boat, they know its systems, and they'll need to be available to answer questions. What you don't want is a seller who fills every quiet moment with talk about how great the boat is. If you find yourself being managed rather than given space to evaluate, that's worth noting.

Your surveyor should be actively working during the sea trial, not just watching. They should be moving through the boat, checking things, making notes. If they're standing in the cockpit chatting, they're not doing their job.

What to Test Under Power

Before you leave the dock, the engine should be cold-started. A cold start tells you more than a warm one — a warm engine that has been running for 20 minutes before you arrive is sometimes the sign of a seller who knows the engine is difficult to start cold. Note how long it takes, any smoke color, and any unusual sounds.

Gear engagement. In the slip, with lines still attached, engage forward and reverse deliberately. The transition should be smooth. Any grinding, delay, or hesitation in gear engagement is a concern for the transmission. Do this multiple times.

Engine performance under load. Once underway and at cruising RPM, the engine should run smoothly without excess vibration, smoke, or temperature rise. Check the temperature gauge at regular intervals. An engine that overheats under normal load has an impeller problem, a raw water intake issue, or worse.

Prop walk in forward and reverse. Every boat with a propeller has prop walk — the tendency of the stern to swing one direction due to propeller torque. Note the direction and strength in forward, and especially in reverse. Docking this boat alone will require knowing exactly how it behaves in reverse. Test it deliberately, not briefly.

Maximum RPM and boat speed. Run the engine to full throttle in open water for a sustained period. The RPM should reach the manufacturer's rated maximum or close to it. Significant shortfall in maximum RPM typically indicates a fouled bottom, an oversized propeller, or a propeller that has been replaced with the wrong pitch. Note the boat speed at cruise RPM.

What to Test Under Sail

If the sea trial is conducted on a day with under 8 knots of wind, push hard for a postponement. A boat sailing in 6 knots of breeze tells you almost nothing about how it will feel in the conditions you'll actually sail in. The minimum useful condition is 10–12 knots; 15+ knots in flat water is ideal. If you're buying an offshore boat, some assessment in a seaway is worth arranging even if it means a longer trial.

Upwind angle. Put the boat close-hauled and note the pointing angle. A well-tuned modern cruiser should point 35–40 degrees apparent without significant leeway. If the boat feels like it's fighting to get upwind and making a lot of leeway, the rig tune is off, the sails are tired, or both.

Tacking. Tack through the wind multiple times and note how cleanly it goes. Does the bow fall through easily, or does it stall and have to be forced through? A boat that won't tack reliably has a problem that will affect every sail.

Sail trim response. Adjust sheet tension and watch how quickly the boat responds. An older sail that has lost its shape won't respond to trim the way a sail in good condition does. Note whether the traveler, sheet leads, and sail controls feel functional — hardware that's frozen or intermittently jammed will need attention.

Heel angle at various points of sail. At what wind speed does the boat become hard to handle? Most cruising designs should feel comfortable in 18–20 knots with a reefed main; a boat that is overpowered and difficult to steer in those conditions has a rig/sail plan mismatch or a stability issue that warrants investigation.

Autopilot. If the boat has an autopilot, engage it at a steady point of sail and watch how it performs. A functional autopilot should hold a heading within a few degrees without constant correction. One that hunts, oscillates, or gives up in moderate conditions is either misadjusted or worn out. Autopilot replacement is a $1,500–$4,000 expense.

Structural Checks While Sailing

Rig movement. Stand at the base of the mast while the boat is sailing and look up. Is the mast staying still, or is there visible movement? In a well-tuned rig, the mast should be a fixed column. Movement — particularly lateral sway — indicates insufficient shroud tension, loose chainplates, or a structural problem. Have your surveyor watch this as well.

Chainplate flex. With the boat heeled under sail load, have someone check the chainplate-to-hull joints from inside the boat. Any movement, any sound, or any fresh water ingress at the joint is a structural concern. The loads on chainplates under sail are enormous; any flex at the attachment point means the fitting is not doing its job.

Traveler and furling systems. The mainsheet traveler should move smoothly under load, and the jib furler should furl and unfurl without resistance. Travelers that are frozen and furlers that are stiff or jumpy are maintenance items that reveal how the boat has been cared for overall.

Hatches and port lights underway. With the boat heeled, check whether any hatches or opening port lights are showing water intrusion. Hatches that are perfect at the dock often leak when the boat is sailing. Close all hatches before the sea trial and check them during.

Below-Decks Checks While Underway

At some point during the sea trial — ideally while sailing in reasonable conditions — go below and spend five to ten minutes making systematic checks.

Bilge. Check the bilge. Is there water? How much, and where is it coming from? Some water in the bilge is normal on an older boat; a bilge that is filling noticeably during the sail means something is leaking under sailing loads that is not leaking at the dock. Identify the source before accepting it.

Through-hull behavior. Check the through-hulls below the waterline while the boat is sailing and heeled. Are any of them showing weeping or dripping that wasn't present at the dock? A through-hull that leaks slightly at heel but not at rest is a through-hull that needs service.

New sounds. Listen. Stand still and listen to what the boat is telling you. Clicking sounds from the keel area, grinding from any rotating part, creaking from bulkheads, or water sounds in places that don't explain themselves — note everything and ask your surveyor to assess.

Interior structural movement. Look at the bulkheads and the hull-to-deck joint from inside. Any movement, cracking gelcoat at joints, or fresh debris from stressed laminates should be flagged.

The Emotional Detachment Challenge

The hardest part of the sea trial is that boats that sail well make you want to own them. A boat that moves easily through the water, has a balanced helm, and points well is a joy to sail — and that joy can cause you to minimize what you found below, rationalize the state of the rigging, and decide that the blistering wasn't that bad. This is normal and it is how buyers get burned.

Build in a deliberate pause between the sea trial and any decision. Don't make an offer the afternoon of the trial. Sleep on it. Go back to your notes and the surveyor's findings rather than your memory of how the boat felt under sail. The boat you want to buy and the boat you should buy are occasionally the same boat; they are not always.

What to Do After

After the sea trial, sit down with your surveyor and go through the findings systematically before you leave the dock. What requires immediate correction? What is deferred maintenance that's acceptable given the price? What is unknown and requires further investigation? Get this conversation on the record while the observations are fresh. The surveyor's written report will follow, but the conversation after the trial is where the most useful unvarnished assessments surface.

If the sea trial revealed significant issues you weren't aware of, your options are: walk away, renegotiate the price with the survey findings as documentation, or ask the seller to remedy specific defects before closing. All three are legitimate paths. The path to avoid is accepting problems you didn't budget for because you've already invested emotionally in owning the boat.
