International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea

The ColRegs (IRPCS 1972) are the navigation rules that govern every vessel in every international water. Not racing rules, not local bylaws — these are the rules that carry legal force at sea. Four practical guides for offshore sailors.

These are not racing rules. The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) govern race courses under management. ColRegs govern all vessels at all other times — at anchor, offshore, in fog, and in port. Where they overlap, ColRegs take precedence except in the presence of an officially sanctioned racing authority.
