Southeast Asia Destination Guides

Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines — the monsoon-driven sailing circuit of the Andaman Sea and beyond

Southeast Asia is one of the most extraordinary sailing regions on Earth, and one of the most misunderstood. The weather is entirely monsoon-driven — two distinct seasons separate the passable from the impassable, and the difference between the NE monsoon (November to April, calm and settled) and the SW monsoon (May to October, rough and wet in the Andaman Sea) is not a matter of comfort but of seamanship. Timing is the first thing to understand before sailing anywhere in this region.

The rewards are proportional to the planning: Thailand's Andaman coast puts Phang Nga Bay's limestone karst within daysailing distance of a world-class marina infrastructure. Langkawi in Malaysia gives cruisers duty-free fuel, chandlery, and provisioning that shaves real money off the cost of extended cruising. Indonesia's scale — 3,000 nautical miles from west to east, 17,508 islands — offers a lifetime of cruising, from the accessible and culturally rich Bali to the remote Banda Sea to the marine biodiversity of Raja Ampat. The Philippines is harder — typhoon risk, limited marinas, and complex paperwork — but Palawan's Bacuit Archipelago is among the most beautiful places accessible by sailboat anywhere in the world.

All four destinations require cruising permits or customs clearance procedures more complex than most Western sailors are accustomed to. An agent makes entry and exit easier in Indonesia and the Philippines especially. These guides address the paperwork directly.
