Fiberglass: What to Look For on the Bottom
Osmotic blistering is the most common fiberglass problem on older production sailboats. It occurs when water permeates the gelcoat and reacts with the underlying fiberglass laminate, creating blisters ranging from pinhead-sized to golf ball-sized on the hull below the waterline. Minor blistering — small, isolated blisters that haven't penetrated into the laminate — is a maintenance issue, not a structural one. Star-shaped or linear stress cracks, especially around hardware mounting points (chainplates, keel bolts, stanchion bases), are different. They indicate that loads are being transmitted through the hull in ways that are creating stress concentrations. Some of these are manageable; some indicate structural issues. The surveyor will note them; don't ignore them.
The Engine: What Hours Don't Tell You
Engine hours are a starting point, not a verdict. A 3,000-hour diesel that has been properly maintained — impeller replaced annually, heat exchanger cleaned, injectors serviced, zinc anodes replaced — is a better engine than a 500-hour diesel that has been neglected. Ask for the service records. No service records is a red flag; it means either the work wasn't done or nobody thought to keep track, both of which are informative.
The raw water impeller question comes up at every pre-purchase survey: when was it last replaced? The impeller is the rubber pump component that circulates raw (sea) water through the engine's cooling system. It fails without warning, and when it does, the engine overheats quickly. First Year Reality

The first year's maintenance budget will overrun your estimate. This is not a failure of planning — it is the normal process of a boat revealing itself to a new owner who is still learning how the systems fit together.
The boats that become genuinely good cruising platforms after a few years are the ones where the owner paid attention to what the boat was telling them and addressed problems systematically rather than deferred them. Deferred maintenance compounds. A leaking chainplate that gets a dab of sealant and a mental note becomes a rotten deck beam. A holding tank with a marginal pump becomes a backup into the bilge. The boat is not being difficult — it is communicating, and the first year is when you learn the language.
